ABC Action News- Stranger Donates Billboard for Kidney Patient

Posted: 01/16/2013

LITHIA, Fla. – Devon Carver desperately needs a kidney, and a stranger has stepped in to help with a message for all the Tampa Bay area to see.

When Carver is not hooked up to a dialysis machine, she is going through her bills to figure out how her family can make ends meet.  And more importantly, how she can stay alive.

“I have not felt remotely healthy since I was 21.” said Carver. “They don’t think I have time to wait for a cadaver kidney, which could take six or seven years. Doctors think a live kidney is my best chance, but we’ve been praying and waiting for more than a year-and-a-half.”

The loving wife and mother to a 12-year-old son, Devon needs a kidney.

The family has drained their savings and the college account for David is depleted.

Mom’s Plea for Kidney Reaches Billboard – Bay News 9

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY –

A Bay area mother is pleading to the public.

She needs a new kidney, again.

Now, Devon Carver’s story is getting out to people across the Tampa area, thanks to multiple billboards along area roadways.
They read: “Local Mother Needs Living Kidney Donor.”

“I hope it saves my life,” Carver said.

A neighbor helped launch the billboard, which CBS Outdoor is running as a public service announcement.
It shows Devon and her 12-year-old son.
Carver was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was two.

She had been warned about some of the complications that can go along with the disease, but vowed they would never happen to her.

Now, at age 34, it is happening. Devon is on dialysis eleven hours a day and has already had one failed kidney transplant.

“It’s been a bad go-aroun...

UPDATE: December 3, 2012
For those of you who have asked about my cousin donating her kidney; that all fell through. When they mixed her blood with mine in a dish, her antibodies and antigens killed mine. She was ruled out for me, but maybe someone else. She may be able to get on the Swap List next year

UPDATE: December 17, 2012

Just a quick update, Devon’s surgery went well on Friday. The doctor was happy with how well she handled the actual surgery. They handled the couple problem toes but didn’t have to cut into her lower foot section at all. She came out of recovery very late on Friday night and has been very groggy for the last couple days. She appreciates all the thoughts and well wishes, I know this is going to be a tough thing for her to get through, but know that I am here to help her through her journey as I always am. She is surely the strongest person I have ever met. -Brandon

UPDATE: December 3, 2012

“Okay, I was asked to put up an update on my health by several people and I decided I didn’t want to do it because I didn’t want people feeling sorry for me, but here it is after I have told the story 40 times already.

Several weeks ago, they put the catheter in my groin and pet at stint in my left leg to get the blood moving better. My feet and legs had streaking pain and they thought this would

be the best. After that hospital stay and procedure, I had complained to my nurse that my port was painful and the very next day when I went back to her, I asked her to look at it again and there was a huge cyst that had grown over and under my port. Went to the hospital the next day and they took my port out and replaced it on the right side of my body...
